If you are a golfer, it goes without saying that you want to improve your game. There are a number of things you can do to improve your game. You can spend money on lessons, you can buy books and videos. Practice, practice, practice. But below are six simple suggestions that will immediately improve your score without much fuss and no expense.
The first thing you need to do is get a decent nights sleep. No, I am not kidding. Fatigue means you cannot play to your potential. Try for the recommended eight hours sleep before heading out to the course.
Many people rush out to the course instead of taking the time to have a nutritious breakfast or lunch. Food is fuel. If you are playing on an empty tank or with low grade fuel, you will not achieve the scores you want. You will be asking your body to perform for a few hours, make sure it is adequately fueled. This means a healthy meal with a good bit of protein and complex carbohydrates not a bag of Doritos.
Once you get to the course, it is very important to warm up. Many people consider the first few holes as warm up holes and are content with worse scores here. Get to the course 15-30 minutes early and stretch. Movement oriented stretches and serious warm up swings will dramatically improve your scores on the first few holes.
It is also important to stretch a bit as you are playing the course. Constant movement will keep you limber and prevent you from tightening up. Often people will complain of a tight lower back or shoulders while playing. A few stretches between holes will help prevent that. Walking the course instead of using a cart can also help to alleviate some of the stiffness.
Just as you fueled up before you hit the course, it is also a good idea to keep yourself fueled while playing. Healthy snacks such as fruit and/or energy bars should be consumed every fifth or sixth hole to keep you energy levels peak. Save the pretzels and beer for the 19th hole.
Keeping hydrated is also an important thing to do while playing golf. Dehydration can result in loss of energy. With a loss of energy comes a loss of focus, and that can mean worse scores than you would like. Make sure to carry water with you. It is also important to drink a lot before you head out in order to properly hydrate your muscles.
These six simple suggestions will are easy to implement, and will not cost you anything. You will feel better during and after your game. Try it and you will see better scores immediately.
