While I would certainly recommend some lessons from a professional, there are certain steps that you can work to improve on your own. These are the basics to the golf swing; things that a professional will tell you before he gets to dissecting the many ways in which you may not be implementing these basics correctly. Lets save a few hundred dollars in lessons and get to a point where you have, at least, a passable idea of how the swing should work.
Balance is key throughout the swing and begins as you address the ball. Keeping your head up, you want to make sure your back is straight, legs are slightly bent and that your body weight is distributed evenly on your feet, both side to side and forward and back.
As you begin the backswing, be conscious of keeping your leading arm straight and your head still. This will help ensure that you deliver the clubhead back to the same position you began with. Use your body and shoulders to turn and bring the club back. Your weight will naturally shift to your back leg, but you will want to keep your lower body as still as possible and your eyes over the golf ball, where they began.
Keeping your head up will allow your front shoulder to come in beneath your chin. This should be the extent of the motion of your backswing. Any additional turn will come from your hips. Try to think of your body as rotating around your spine. If you feel your leading arm begin to break at the elbow, you have turned too far. With practice and flexibility training you will be able to increase your turn and backswing without sacrificing the straightness of that arm.
As you begin your swing downward, let your weight shift back toward your front foot. This should be the leading motion. Your body will follow, uncoiling from the hips and then the shoulders. With your eyes always on the ball, you will want your hands to lead the club through contact. Your hands, when swinging properly, will be in front of the ball when the club hits it.
Finally, it is important to follow through with your swing. Try to imagine swinging through the ball, not at it. Let the force of your follow through bring your body around, so that you finish with your belly facing the target. A little practice with these basics will go a long way to improving your game and the enjoyment you get from it.
