My grandfather died a month ago so we went down for the wake. He lived a long full life and peacefully died at the age of 97 in Manila, Philippines leaving my grandmother alone. Everybody went home to Manila, even their sons and daughters who are now living in New York.

It was like a reunion of sorts because most of them haven’t seen the country for at least 5 years or so. It was a frenzied time for me as everybody wanted to keep abreast of all that has been happening and they wanted to see the changes and developments done since they’ve been away. We went to different shopping malls everyday and would only come home at dusk to recite the 9 day long prayers for the dead.

Grandma who was now 92 years old does not like to be left alone at the moment. With her husband dead and all his children around, she wanted to be with them where ever they went. It needed some work done to have grandma along on our tours. She didn’t walk as fast as she used to so we had to pack her wheelchair in the trunk and brought it with us every where we went.

On one of our trips, we visited the Mall of Asia or MOA as most Filipinos fondly call it. It is the 4th largest mall in the world and boasts of a land area of 42 hectares. The floor area occupies 410,000 square meters and is visited by 200,000 foot traffic everyday. Imagine a 92 year old woman in the midst of all that.

Inside the mall, while i was steering grandma’s wheelchair left and right to avoid other people, a golf cart passed by. Seeing a golf cart inside a mall was a first time for me and it was awesome! I haven’t quite seen anything like it. We stopped the cart and asked the driver if he could tour my grandmother around.

One of our companions took the wheelchair and i hopped into the cart with grandma and Mae, one of her granddaughters. The ride was absolutely great because MOA was really huge. The cart took us around the mall and having an elderly woman with us was no problem at all. What usually would take us a long time to go to didn’t take time at all.

There is more to riding a golf cart inside the mall. When grandma was in her wheelchair, people at the mall did not take notice and wouldn’t bother to get out of our way at all. As we were atop the buggy, they made way for us as soon as they saw us coming.

The golf buggy can really come in handy in getting around a huge estate. I could picture it easily touring around a large area or even in a nursing home. The elderly can have a chance to get around without tiring themselves out.

Golf carts used to be seen in country clubs only but there is a much wider variety of purpose it can serve. It started out as a sport vehicle, but as of today it serves not only golfers but the elderly and physically challenged as well.
